Students Participate in Empty Bowls Program

Eight Eaglebrook students and two faculty members made the drive north to Putney, VT on Saturday, October 12 to take part in the Empty Bowls Program. Jaye Pope, Visual Arts faculty member and Brattleboro, VT resident has donated her own bowls to the program over the years.

Empty Bowls, founded in 2003, allows area potters to support a good cause by donating their handmade bowls. Empty Bowls participants receive a ticket for $25 and are then able to select a bowl from the dozens available. Participants are then served a meal consisting of soup, bread, and cheese donated by local restaurants and bakeries. After the meal, each participant is able to bring their bowl home. All proceeds support Groundworks. Groundworks was established in 2015 following the merger of the Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center and the Morningside Shelter. They provide ongoing support to families and individuals facing housing and food insecurity in the greater Brattleboro, VT area. The Empty Bowls program is Groundwork’s biggest annual fundraiser. Groundwork is able to keep 100% of the proceeds generated by the Empty Bowls program. In 2018, Groundwork’s collected an astonishing $30,000 from the Empty Bowls program.

Sixth Form student Ajay R. was one of eight students who participated in the community service trip. Ajay said, “It was a great experience getting to serve food to roughly 250 people from the local community.” Eaglebrook students are able to participate in a wide variety of community outreach trips throughout the school year.
