Varsity Tennis Puts on a Show for Grandparents Day, Best Fay 7-0

DEERFIELD, Mass. – April 26, 2024 – Choate may owe Fay an apology because the Brookies bounced back from last week’s loss to the Wild Boars with a convincing win over their visitors from Southborough, Massachusetts. 

 

And the best part? Eaglebrook Grandparents, parents, and fans were treated to a show. 

 

Both Eaglebrook and Fay played dynamic doubles, with some of the best-quality doubles we’ve seen a competing team in a long time. Players switched sides mid-point, hustled, and hit multiple volleys and overheads. Some Brookies even threaded balls down the doubles alley for a clean winner. 

 

Nikita D. '25 and Graham H. '25 were first off the court after hitting sweet backhands, covering the court well, and placing volleys low and away from opponents. 

 

Next off were Yuxuan Z. '24 and Tomas T. '24. They were a force, with solid strokes—a formidable pair to beat. 

 

Grant F. '25 and Reed P. '24 followed closely. Their court consisted of I-Formations, volley battles, and wicked serves. It was riveting doubles all around and the Brookies came away with all four doubles victories, giving us the doubles point. 

 

Players immediately took to the courts to get the singles underway. Eaglebrook used its momentum to lock in some early victories at No. 6 and No. 5. 

 

Brookie No. 2 (Grant) and Brookie No. 4 (Reed) were new to their positions after a successful intra-squad challenge match. Nerves did not get the best of them, as each played with grit. 

 

Yuxuan collected a comfortable 8-1 victory over his opponent, and Pearce battled it to a tiebreaker finish 8-7 (7-4). 

 

Players on both sides, across all matches, demonstrated sportsmanship and high-quality tennis. A special thanks to Brookie Nos. 7 and 8 who stepped up to join varsity and play in our exhibition matches. 

 

William K. '24 and Yuxuan C. '25 were an entertaining doubles pair and enjoyed their first victory in a varsity match-up. Despite the final score, Fay was a challenging and talented team that pushed the Brookies to play some of their best tennis. 

 

The boys look forward to a week of rest from competitive play, but no doubt they will be practicing hard while they enjoy the warm and sunny weather with some tunes for good measure.
